Pluralism, Tenancy and Poverty: Cultivating Open-Mindedness in Poverty Studies

Theoretical pluralism adds depth to the mixing of methods in development studies. In this paper, pluralism is grounded in an assumption that society has both structure and complexity. Interdisciplinary research generates a dialogue across epistemological chasms. Such research can be valued for its discursive bridging function as well as for improved measurement. Divergent schools of thought can be brought into contact by reconceptualising the objects of research, such as contracts or coercion. An example – Indian tenancy literature -is briefly explored, in which alternative ways of measuring power and of interpreting coercion arise. Thus the possibilities for increased dialogue about poverty reduction are enhanced.
